Chilean volcano erupts

Posted by Ren on June 4, 2011 at 11:42 PM

The Puyehue-Cordon Caulle Volcano in Chile erupted today in the afternoon (local time) sending a plume of ash 10km into the sky. 20 earthquakes had been detected from the volcano since midnight but yesterday SERNAGEOMIN reported 60 earthquakes per hour. 3500 people were evacuated from the area, and a Chile-Argentina border crossing was closed. Ash fell on the town of Bariloche in Argentina 62 miles east of the volcano.

Puyehue-Cordon Caulle last erupted in 1990 and in 1960.
