Tungurahua re-activates

At around 4:40am (local time) a constant seismic tremor was detected on Tungurahua Volcano. It was followed by a moderate explosion at around 5:50am (local time), a roaring sound which lasted 5 minutes was reported. Lapilli and ashfall was reported in Banos, Pillate, and Juive. Satellite images showed thermal anomaly in the crater at around 5:58am.


A satellite image showed a plume of Tungurahua drifting towards the northeast and then onto the southeast. Washington VAAC reported that the ash plume reached the height of 7km-8km.


Ashfall was reported in the Cevallos area at approximately 9:00am. Seismic activity continued.
