Rangers in the Volcan Turrialba National Park in Costa Rica yesterday reported an eruption of Turrialba Volcano at around 15:40 local time. Ashfall was reported in the settlements of Santa Cruz and La Central, and the park was then closed. On 11th January OVSICORI-UNA noted that there were several anomalies at the top which included a very hot ground in the area from the west crater to the east crater, and a strong flow of hot gases coming from an area between the central and western craters.
OVSICORI-UNA conducted an investigation of the summit area today and reported the ash came from the southeast sector of the outer main crater wall and that a fissure had opened up there but was smaller than the fissure which had opened up on the west side of the inner main crater wall in January 2010. It was said that a phreatic eruption was the type of eruption which had took place yesterday. A strong emission of gases continue.
